Every year, millions of businesses across the world fail. The failure rate is particularly high among small and medium-size companies. In fact, the majority of startups end in failure and most disappear within the first two years of their existence.

For me, there are some strong parallels between failing a business venture and failing to lose weight. Similarly to setting up a business, many set out to lose weight (often several times a year — before the summer, after the festive season or as a New Year’s resolution), and most fail.

There is some substantial research to show that on average, people who join weight-loss programs, such as Weight Watchers, tend to lose more weight and keep it off for longer, compared to the ones who try it by themselves.

In this post, I want to look at why this might be and what business owners and managers can learn from it to improve their chances of business success and survival.

Firstly, there is just this little bit more of a commitment when you join a weight-loss group. You normally pay to join, you have to actually contact them and take initiative. When you start a business, there is generally a high level of commitment, too — so nothing different here. The real differences are in what happens next:

Establish a realistic weight-loss plan. When you set off on your weight-loss program, you first put together a plan that takes into account where you are today and where you like to get to. Based on your current situation, you then create a realistic and achievable plan, with clear milestones and targets.

 Set the right metrics. We all know that weight on its own is not a sufficient measure. A better method is to put your weight in relation to your height (Body Mass Index) and also measure the percentage of your body fat as well as the actual loss of inches. At the same time, it is important to monitor overall health and keep a check on blood pressure, heart rate, cholesterol levels, etc…

 Monitor progress regularly. Weight Watchers will organize regular meetings to review progress. Normally, the group will get together once a week when everyone will get measured (inches, pounds). Then a discussion will take place about what an individual could do better to improve results.

For me, these are the key reasons why weight-loss programs are successful and I believe they are also the key reasons that make businesses successful, especially startups.

 For me, businesses fail because:

They fail to plan. They haven’t got a clear and simple plan that lays out what they want to achieve and the key milestones they need to hit along the way.

 They fail to measure. They are lacking the key metrics that will help them to understand how well they are doing. Startups need to better look at the numbers, carefully monitoring profit margins, cash flow and customer feedback.

 They fail to regularly monitor progress. Without the right metrics, it is then also not possible to review progress and regularly analyze where you are in relation to your plans. These regular — and honest — reality checks are vital to decide what to do next or where to change direction.
